How do you feel when something you’ve done goes wrong? Does your heart sink and your stomach clench as you worry about the repercussions of failing? Would you prefer to keep quiet about your failure and hope that no one finds out?
The reality is that we don’t get things right the first time. Whether that’s learning a new skill or developing a new product, process, or service, the first attempt is usually not the best. Through sharing the imperfect first attempt and asking for feedback we learn, adjust, and improve.
However, despite knowing that there is great learning in our failures, we often hold back from sharing them. We worry about what other people think, about being criticised and the impact that might have on our career progression. By not sharing failures we miss opportunities. Our failures are hard earned, and by sharing we also help others learn.
How do we create a culture at work where, sharing and learning from our failures is normal and part of the everyday? How do we create a culture where we use our failures as a chance to improve and develop?
