According to NESTA (who named this concept Virtual Randomised Coffee Trials), the benefits of random connections include: 

• Providing legitimacy to connect and chat to people about things that aren't directly work-related gives us an important break from our working day.
• Totally random conversations, as well as some very useful work-related conversations can spark fresh thinking, creativity and can be enjoyable!
• Practical support and a sense of team and belonging if you are working from home and missing the connections of an office environment.
• Offers the chance to make time to talk to people who might offer different perspectives, advice and support, and to meet people who you won't be directly working with but it's nice to know who they are! 
• It's a really good way of revealing links within a network and encouraging us to collaborate. Being part of a random connection process gives us permission to spend and honour the time.
• It’s a prompt to talk to someone new (or sometimes someone you already know), and the permission to take 30 minutes just to see what's going on, without any particular agenda or goal.
